By Curt Woodward, Globe Staff

“Last fall, flush with $500 million in venture capital, DraftKings Inc. burst onto the national scene with an inescapable ad campaign tied to the National Football League’s kickoff.

What a difference a year makes. Chastened by battles with officials in multiple states that threatened to tank the daily fantasy sports industry, DraftKings has spent months developing new procedures and controls that will help the company comply with a long list of new government regulations.”

DraftKings’ latest product update is a first-ever Daily Fantasy Sports platform where players can create fully-customizable, private contests just for their friends or colleagues

BOSTON, Mass., August 16, 2016 – There’s a new way to play Daily Fantasy Sports with friends, and it’s never been easier – or more fun and competitive – than with DraftKings Leagues. Starting today, the new product update from DraftKings, one of the world’s leading Daily Fantasy Sports platforms, allows players to start a league just for their friends and create fully-customizable, private contests. DraftKings shares all the details in this video.

With 10 sports to choose from, DraftKings Leagues has the largest variety of Daily Fantasy Sports contests, allowing players to compete in baseball, basketball, NFL, CFL, hockey, golf, NASCAR, MMA, soccer and eSports—all with friends from the same league.

“Fans have been asking for this product for months, and now it’s here in time for NFL season,” said Paul Liberman, COO and Co-Founder at DraftKings. “By giving our players an exclusive experience they can fully customize just for their friends, it’s like we’re giving them their very own personal DraftKings.”

How It Works:
DraftKings Leagues makes it easy for anyone to create contests, dominate the leaderboards and earn ultimate bragging rights:

  • Open invitations – Whether your friends are on DraftKings or not, invite them via text, e-mail, Facebook or Twitter. Commissioners can create a league with a custom name or use the League name generator.
  • Custom contests – Create contests of any size (maximum 200), choose a free or paid entry fee, and determine the payout structure.
  • Recurring contest mode – Set up a contest once and the system automatically creates the contest for the next week and notifies all league members.
  • Private leaderboards – Track the league’s overall standings, history and upcoming contests online or in the mobile app. Players can also check out their individual team’s stats overall or by sport and see how they measure up against friends, creating a fun, competitive environment.
  • More choices – DraftKings offers contests in the MLB, NBA, NFL, CFL, NHL, PGA, European Tour Golf, NASCAR, MMA and eSports. Soccer offerings include MLS, the English Premier League (EPL), the UEFA Champions League, Liga MX and La Liga.

STATEMENT ON MASSACHUSETTS FANTASY SPORTS LAW FROM DRAFTKINGS CEO JASON ROBINS – 8/10/16

“Today is a special day for DraftKings. Boston has always been our home, and on behalf of more than 300 DraftKings employees, we want to thank Governor Baker and the legislature for supporting our company in the city we love.

“Since we started our business in 2012, we have embraced the vibrant technology community in Massachusetts. The tech sector, along with our world-class sports teams, has provided much of our inspiration over the years as we have evolved as a sports-tech company. Numerous members of this community came together to support this initiative and we are fortunate to be part of such a tightknit network of talented entrepreneurs and innovators. This new law gives us the foundation we need so that we can continue to grow right here in Boston.

“Of course, we would not be here without our millions of committed fans who enjoy the fun and excitement that our games provide.  We also want to particularly thank Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Stan Rosenberg, Ways and Means Chairs Brian Dempsey and Karen Spilka, Economic Development Chairs Eileen Donoghue and Joseph Wagner, Majority Leaders Ron Mariano and Harriette Chandler, and Senate sponsor Ben Downing.

“DraftKings could not be prouder of our Boston roots, and we look forward to continuing as a hub for innovation and jobs in Massachusetts for years to come.”
